My name is Dr. Trudy Jermanovich. I must once again read what is on the BCPS website for how to access the Sex Ed Program. “The Reproductive Health and Disease Prevention curriculum for the 2024-2025 School Year is under revision and will be posted upon approval.” I would like this Board to have a discussion on why this revision is happening so late in the school year, but it must happen at a board meeting or a workshop in the very near future. Is Broward County the only district which has not had their Sex Ed Curriculum approved at the State level? I see many others have had theirs approved. Why has this happened for the last three years since the District could have looked at other approved programs? Unfortunately, if I don’t bring this up at every Board Meeting, I’m fearful that our students will be denied this important component which is still written in state law as a requirement for all public schools.
Next I’d like to address an issue which is on the Agenda regarding how many students do not have internet access on a computer or a tablet. The only way to get some baseline data for this issue would be to do an anonymous survey where parents could fill the survey out online OR return a hard copy survey to the school to be added to the data. It would be a big task, but if you want to analyze the problem, you need this information. As I’ve stated before, the only way to truly transform the way students use textbooks online is to make sure each student has a tablet. They would have access to educational programs as well as the ability to type up and submit their written assignments preparing them for their future.
I know this may seem like an overwhelming ask, but if you concentrate on students who don’t have access at home as we did in the past with the Verizon Grant, it’s a step in the right direction. I also believe this would be the time to partner with the Broward Education Foundation. If you have a fund where people or businesses could donate money to make this happen, perhaps access could begin next school year.
I applaud Dr. Holness for bringing this important equity issue forward.
I Will be speaking about private vans transportation at Broward County Public schools and will be providing a proposal on behalf of many Private school transportation in Broward county and the Department of Consumer affairs. their treatment, injustice, and not following the DCF compliance
