I fully support this item. Given recent legislative changes and declines in student enrollment, it is crucial for Broward County Public Schools to make the most of their existing underutilized facilities rather than spending on expensive leases for private spaces. BCPS simply does not have the financial resources to continue leasing unnecessary space.
Additionally, I recommended relocating the Leadership Development Department to an underenrolled district school instead of keeping it at the FAU Davie campus (even if it is free). This move would set a strong example of fiscal responsibility, reinforce our commitment to BCPS assets, and maximize savings and return on public investment. Using available district school space minimizes external rental costs and highlights the importance of strengthening and utilizing our own facilities within the community. It also clearly demonstrates our intent to prioritize district spaces, which helps limit the expansion of charter schools into our public-school resources. There is no need for this department to be on FAU property. It sets a very strong wrong statement and image for this district. It’s time to prioritize using what you have and using it well!
